My Honest Review of the Ping Hoofer Lite Stand Bag
In my search for the perfect light stand bag, I saw a lot of positive reviews of the Ping Hoofer Lite bag. I wanted someting that was lightweight but still had enough storage and was of high quality. At $245, I felt like this bag seemed a bit steep for what it is compared to the Ogio’s and Sun Mountain’s of the world, but I figured Ping has been making and refining this bag for so long that it must be worth the price. It has a great reputation and from what I understand, a lot of high school and college teams use this bag.
It comes in a ton of colors and while none of them are all that amazing, there should be one that catches your eye. There are so many positive reviews about this bag from YouTubers, social media, Reddit, etc so I figured I would take a look at one in person. My local Dick’s only had one color left, which is the red/white/blue one so I went with that.
Some features:
- Velcro to attach your glove, which I find way better than putting it in a pocket
- 9 pockets, including a full-length one where I typically store my shoes and a light pullover pretty easily
- Plastic loop for your towel
- Comes with a rain hood
- Channel to put the cart strap through
Pros:
- At 5 pounds, it really is quite lightweight so it’s perfect for anyone who wants to carry their bag.
- Lots of pockets. The full-length one is pretty standard. There’s also a pocket to store balls and I’m guessing you can easily fit 2 dozen in there. There’s also a valuables pocket, a pocket to store your drink, and a side pocket for things like your range finder.
- Comfortable straps and pad for your back.
- I only carry 10 to 11 clubs, so all of my clubs fit easily and I never have an issue with space or them rubbing against each other. If you carry 14 clubs, it should also be fine unless you use jumbo grips.
- Decent build quality.
- Awesome customer service (see below re: sagging legs).
- Lots of color options including limited edition ones they do every year.
- You can remove the front pocket cover if you want to have it embroidered with your name or something.
Cons:
- The material they use is fine, but I feel like the rest of the market has evolved a lot and other bag makers are using higher quality material.
- There is a valuables pocket, but no sort of padding or soft lining in it. Not the biggest issue by any means.
- Sagging legs. This was the one that that really bothered me. The legs started to sag just a few months after I bought this bag. However, I contacted Ping and they sent me a free set of replacement legs for free. Awesome customer service.
- A little expensive for what it is.
- Since I got the white one, it got dirty really quick (see image below), and because of the material, it is not easy to clean. It’s not like you can throw this into a washing machine.
- This is a very popular bag and if you care about being different, this isn’t the bag for you. But not everyone cares about that, so it may not be a con for everyone.
bag gets super dirty |
Overall, it is a high quality bag that feels mass produced, because that’s exactly what it is. Ping has iterated on this bag for many years as the standard Hoofer bag has been around since the 80’s. They’ve received a lot of great feedback over the years to improve the design and features, but you also get a sense that they’ve optimized cost and manufacturing along with that.
If I was stuck with this bag for the rest of my life, I wouldn’t be disappointed because it is just a good quality, practical, no-frills, and no-nonsense bag that should last you many years. It doesn’t have the attention to detail that other bags on the market have, but not everyone cares about those little things. After a couple of years of use, I’ve since replaced mine, which I will post about later.
Overall, I give it a solid 8.5/10.
